One of the most fundamental requirements for any connected, embedded device is management. Management requirements exist at the network, system, and application levels. Because of the diversity of embedded systems, management solutions must be able to accommodate many types of embedded products and yet adhere to industry standards in order to achieve interoperability. In addition, embedded developers must anticipate the various ways in which system administrators want to interact with a network of managed devices. An emerging concern involves security, which involves protection of embedded devices from unauthorized access.
The universally accepted industry standard for network management is the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP). SNMP provides a standards-based approach to network management that is both comprehensive and extremely flexible. SNMP-managed devices are now found throughout networks and the Internet, from servers and PC’s to routers, switches, and printers. The recently ratified version 3 (SNMPv3) addresses security requirements through encryption, authentication, and access control rules.
Embedded Solution Partners' cornerstone offering for Network Management is embeddedMIND from the S3. embeddedMIND is a unified management infrastructure solution that enables telecom and network equipment manufacturers to quickly and easily build multi-protocol network management into their products.
